Lecture 17:  Muscle Physiology - Invertebrate muscles 

Sherwood- Chapter 8

Objective:  Many invertebrate muscles are smooth.

1.  Molluscan catch muscle
        a.  remains contracted without fatigue and little oxygen consumption
        b.  cross-bridge release responds to relaxing nerve impulses and serotonin
2.  Crustacean muscle
        a.  gross arrangement is pinnate instead of parallel to the direction of pull
        b.  multiple innervation of a single muscle cell
3.  Insect flight muscle
        a.  synchronous muscles
        b.  asynchronous muscles
