Humans interact with the environment surrounding them every day. We use environmental goods and services to produce food, to fuel industry, and to provide recreation. We also use the environment to process human waste products, including carbon dioxide from fossil fuel consumption, heat from power plants, and sewage.

Environmental Biology investigates the goods and services delivered from Nature to us and the impacts of human acivity on the capacity of Nature to provide these benefits. Through a suite of "ecosystem modules," we will study such diverse environments as the coral reefs of the Carribean, the oyster and seagrass beds of the Chesapeake Bay, and the temperate forets of the Appalachian Mountains.
