(Sample plan for student entering WVU beginning in Aug. 2001)

(note: this checklist only uses the new course numbers.  We will provide another one for students who entered before August 2001 that includes the old course numbers.  Also, in reviewing these requirements, no courses were double-counted for college and university requirements.  Students will gain more flexibility if they double-count the maximum number of requirements as noted below for each requirement and may need more than 128 hours to complete two majors).

WOMEN’S STUDIES ENTRANCE and MAJOR REQUIREMENTS:  

58 credit hours, a minimum  2.0 overall GPA, students are required to earn a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the 9 required hours and an overall 2.0 in all their major courses.  Students must complete 30 hours of approved women’s studies courses.

Advanced Women’s Studies elective courses:  The following courses will meet this requirement:  WMST 310: The Aging Woman; WMST 320: Women Religion and Spirituality; WMST 340: Gender and Violence (currently being submitted for approval as new course by faculty senate); WMST 448: Sexuality in American Culture; WMST 449: Women’s Movements Since 1960; WMST 493: Special Topics courses; CHPR 390: Women and Health; ENGL 385: American Women Writers; ENGL 386: British Women Writers; ENGL 387: Topics in Women’s Literature; GEOG 412: Seminar Geography of Gender; HIST 445: History of American Women; HIST 446: History of European Women to 1700; SOCA 360: Women & Men in Society; SOCA 405: Intro to Social Inequality.  Included in the 12 hours may be no more than 6 hours of independent study (WMST 495) or field experience (WMST 491) credit.

All 21 hours may be courses with a WMST prefix, or a student’s program of study may include approved courses distributed across at least two other units in addition to those with a WMST prefix.  These 6 hours may also be courses that students could take to fulfill the requirements of a second major, i.e., in history or English.  The Center maintains a list of available courses that students may use for these electives.
