          Sociology and Anthropology

The Division of Sociology and Anthropology is part of the School of Applied Social Sciences in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. The sociology faculty in the Division are active in teaching and researching a variety of sociological issues important to West Virginia, Appalachia, and the United States. These issues include, but are not limited to, juvenile violence, terrorism, hate crimes, welfare reform, unemployment, and economic development. A number of faculty have current research grants that address these issues, and have published important writings on these topics in nationally prominent publications, given invited lectures at other universities, and presented research papers at national conferences. The anthropology faculty in the Division are active in teaching, research, and service concerning issues and interests in non-western cultures in Latin America and Africa, and in archeology and human evolution. They have published numerous books and articles, given invited lecture at professional meetings, at universities, and to the public on subjects of their expertise.

In other words, a great deal of exciting and important work is ongoing in the Division of Sociology and Anthropology, work which attracts many students because of our vital connection with the contemporary world. Accordingly, the Division needs financial support to strengthen its significant teaching mission, especially to WVU undergraduates. Faculty enrichment is one way to support our teachers as they seek to better instruct our students. In order to challenge those students, prominent speakers from other institutions are invited regularly to speak to our majors and to the general WVU population. Financial support is needed to continue this program which introduces WVU students to the best. In addition, contributions that would support student summer internships or hands-on fieldwork experience in international museums (Natural History Museum, London) or excavations (England, France) would enhance an anthropology program that does not have a fieldwork component.
