          Religious Studies

The Program for Religious Studies serves students with either a Christian or non-Christian background. For Christian students, the program expands their base of knowledge. For those outside of the Christian faith, it gives them the opportunity to explore Christian studies. In general, our courses introduce students to the academic aspect of theological study and debate. The religious studies courses at WVU challenge students to explore new issues and enter into the realm of academic religious discourse. Often students become so interested in these scholarly issues that they offer to continue their studies following a course's conclusion! Many also ask to become Religion majors or minors, even if far advanced in their own academic concentration.

Religious studies is a unique and important facet of the college experience. Learning about other religious traditions is extremely important in today's global atmosphere. Interaction with other cultures is as easy as sending an e-mail. But how can one effectively relate to those outside of one's own tradition with no appreciation or understanding of other world religions? The Program for Religious Studies provides students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in cultures and traditions previously not encountered which enables students to become well-rounded, knowledgeable members of contemporary society.

Finally, the Program for Religious Studies supports and compliments other programs at WVU such as History, Philosophy, and English. Thus, the program works well in conjunction with other fields of study. Yet on its own, the Program for Religious Studies provides students with the opportunity to complement and expand their own religious beliefs, allowing for spiritual fullness and growth. We are not yet where we want to be, however. There is increasing interest in religious studies at WVU, and our needs are genuine.
