          History

Everything that exists in the present has come out of the past. Thus the study of history is all encompassing. Through the study of history, students make other people's experiences their own and gain an understanding of the present and a means of appreciating future developments and trends. Moreover, the knowledge gained from studying history has many practical applications in one's life and work. While an individual can successfully manage a bank, for example, without detailed knowledge of the eighteenth century Enlightenment, he or she can not do so without writing reports which explain the meaning of the bank's transactions over time. To write such reports, a manager must have mastered the kind of historical research skills provided by studying History at WVU.

Yet as students of history investigate the past and develop research skills, they face significant challenges in the twenty-first century. New areas of research are opening, reflecting significant new concerns for contemporary society, such as environmental history and globalization of the economy. In order to keep abreast of these new fields of interest as well with changes in the more traditional ones, students and faculty in the Department of History need to be able to develop new skills and access new technology. To cite just two examples: students and faculty must have the means to take advantage of the vast opportunities for teaching and research provided by the Internet and to travel directly to regions of interest if the department is to be able to continue to provide the type of instruction that will impart the knowledge and skills needed for the study of history in the years ahead.

Support for the Department of History thus represents an important investment in understanding the present and future and in providing the type of research skills needed for a wide variety of careers.
