The Geography Program at West Virginia University is one of the most dynamic and widely recognized new programs in the United States. The faculty is internationally known and has given invited presentations in numerous international locations. WVU Geography is a national leader in Geographic Information Science (GIS), which was named one of the top high technologies by the United States government for the 21st Century. WVU Geography has a state- of-the-art GIS laboratory, one of the most advanced in the eastern United States. One of the newest state agencies, the West Virginia GIS Technical Center was located by our state in the Department in White Hall. Several million dollars in external research grants and contracts have been obtained by Geography in recent years placing them near the top in grant acquisition in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. Computer mapping, computer graphics, spatial data handling, Geographic Positioning Systems (GPS) and other technologies are not only taught to West Virginia students, but have been applied to real world problems as close as West Virginia and as far away as South Africa. We seek support to continue to build a world class program. Our student population is increasing because they are experiencing at WVU, first hand, the excitement and the possibilities of careers in geography. This is an emerging field heavily dominated by technology--and because of this we need support for equipment and instrumentation if we are to continue as one of the most widely recognized program in the United States.
