We need your support because our discipline intersects with all other disciplinary boundaries. Geologists take novels to the beach to read; physicists are also interested in their students' writing abilities, lawyers show up in creative writing classes, historians read historical novels and worry about the dissolution of the line between fact and fiction, Deans write autobiographies and everyone occasionally likes to attend plays or movies based on novels. Because built into our discipline is a sense of narrative, a concept of story and storytelling which is essential, not only to the Capital Campaign, but also to the way we organize our own personal histories and family narratives. Because an increasingly important aspect of English studies includes the story, not just of formal autobiography and biography by celebrated people, but also a consideration of "getting a life" for everyone. This genre encompasses diaries, family histories, oral histories, testimonies, and the way we understand the nature of our lives-both the span of years and the sense of a self we develop that ties those years together. Because unlike some disciplines where major grant support is available through national granting agencies, in English we're especially grateful for small amounts of support. A little goes a long way in our discipline because we're not used to operating on large amounts of funding. ENGLISH PRIORITIES
