The Phi Beta Kappa Society is the oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honors organization in the United States. Founded in Williamsburg, VA in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa celebrates and advocates excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Seventeen presidents (including most recently, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter) and 37 Supreme Court Justices (including 7 of the current 9) are Phi Beta Kappa members. Other well-known Kappans include Glenn Close, Mark Twain, Peyton Manning, Alexander Graham Bell, Booker T. Washington, George Stephanopoulos and our own Drs. Lawrence T. Nichols and Ronald Althouse.
If you are on the list above, please pick up your invitation in the Division’s main office, 307 Knapp Hall.
