Internship Program
The Internship Program is avaialable to all junior and senior status majors in the Division of Sociology and Anthropolgy. The programs offers our students a unique opportunity to obtain practical work experience in an area of future employment. To learn how the program works review all the information below.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. CAN I EARN COURSE CREDIT FOR PARTICIPATING IN AN INTERNSHIP? Yes, the Division offers all of its majors an opportunity to earn course credit through participation in certain internships.
2. HOW MANY HOURS CAN I EARN? All students can earn from 1 to 12 credit hours depending on the amount of hours that you work.
3. HOW DO I FIND AN INTERNSHIP? Located below under Placement section: there are various ways to obtain an internship, explore below to see how one might find an Internship.
4. CAN I GET PAID FOR AN INTERNSHIP? Some Internships are paid but this depends on where you intern. WVU Division of Sociology and Anthropology does not guarantee pay for any internship and this must be something that you as a student work out with the internship provider.
5. DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE CREDIT HOURS? Yes, the internship credit is just like taking any course at WVU. You are earning course credit under an Internship course. Therefore, you must pay tuition on the course. However, if the internship is out of State or not in Morgantown, you might be able to submit a request to Admissions and Records to have all other fees waived because you will not be on campus to utilize any of the services that the fees cover.
6. HOW DO I FIND AN INTERNSHIP SUPERVISOR? You ask either a professor whom you have taken courses from or request that the Internship Director supervise your Internship.
7. WHAT DOES AN INTERNSHIP SUPERVISOR DO? This is a faculty member who assesses your end performance and submits your pass-fail grade.
8. HOW AM I EVALUATED ON MY INTERNSHIP PERFORMANCE? One step in the evaluation is your Journals and Summary report. Your supervising faculty reads your reports and journals making a determination about your efforts while partaking in your internship. Another step in your evaluation is feedback from your internship provider. For a full description of the requirements refer to the Forms section under the Internship Course Contract link.
9. CAN I DO MY INTERNSHIP IN ANY SEMESTER? Yes. Typically, most students do their internships in the Summer sessions but several do internships in the Fall and Spring semesters depending on the internship and the amount of credit hours you desire to earn from your internship.
10. HOW MANY HOURS OF WORK DOES A STUDENT HAVE TO DO TO EARN ONE CREDIT HOUR TOWARDS THEIR DEGREE? The average is for every credit hour you will have to put in 45 hours of service. EX: you wish to earn 3 credit hours – you must work a total of 135 hours.
Internships can be obtained in several ways:
- The first way is you, the student solicit organizations or agencies where you would like to complete an Internship, then apply for course credit in the forms section to the right.

If you have an Internship the following form must be filled out completely and all appropriate signatures must be obtained before submitting the form to the Division of Sociology in the Main Office at 300 Knapp Hall.

Your application will be considered and notice of acceptance will be sent to you.

NOTE: Applying for a position does not guarantee you an internship. Only those who have been selected will be notified. If you do not receive notification within a semester’s period it is recommended that you re-apply the following semester.
