Aaron Carlson 05/17/07 N/A arcarlson16@usa.com U.S Border Patrol Academy Border Patrol Agent As ya know I have been in Tucson, Arizona for work since March 31st. I extended for a second tour so I will be here until June 22 or so. Since Tuscon Sector is the busiest in the country at what we do, other sectors have been sending agents over to help out. They have been doing it several years now. It was my time, and I didnt have a choice, though I did decide for the extension. And starting this week they are mandating a six day work week, with the sixth day being 8 hours of OT. So even more money for me to earn, not like I have much to do on my days off. I work for the Tucson Station, but our area of responisbility (AOR) includes down along the border near Sasabee Arizona. So everyday we drive from 65 to 90 miles just to get to our area of patrol. That is why you may hear of a lot of agents here getting into accidents, especially when working midnights. This area of terrain is much different than south Texas,&nbs p; First of all, no river here, just desert and mountains. Its quite warm but lower humidity than south Texas also. This area is mountainas and the illegals do try to cross the mountains and canyons to try to elude apprehension. All agents here ride solo and the helicopters are a huge tool out here, they try to have two up every shift. They also use four wheelers and horse patrol here. It hasnt rained more than a quarter of an inch since Ive been here. Since it is the "wild west" of the border patrol, most of us carry a long arm everyday, either the 12 gauge shotgun or M4 rifle (.223 like an M16). The border used to be only a four strand barbed wire fence. Now they have started to put up what they call vehicle barriers. These are sections of railroad tracks welded together to make cross sections. These are mainly to stop vehicles. Before these, they had 'drive throughs', vehicle full of illegals drive through the barbed wire, and cross country through the desert. There are still several cars, trucks, and vans left through the desert, wrecked and riddle with bullet holes. Those have seemed to stop and now there is more of a definition of a border. There are a ton of people trying to get through, several hundred a day. We have close to 800 apprehensions a day. And quite a bit of drugs. Anywhere from 200 pounds to 2800. Well just letting you all know what is up, and a few pics. Hope it didnt I drive a 4 wheel drive truck, carry a gun, and get paide for it. |

Amanda J. Haas As for the job that I have now, I love it. It isonly temporary, pending on whether or not Bill Bradley wins the primaries, and then the Presidency. I am also waiting to hear about another job that I am very interested in as well. It is to be a Victim-witness Advocate for my eounty (Essex). I won't find out for a while, so this is the perfect job for me to have for the time being. I may even consider staying with this job if I'm offered the other job, until I find out about the primaries. I am makeing great contacts at this job that could help me out when this is all over. And who knows, maybe Brandley will even win. |
