Admission Requirements and Procedures
Students may declare themselves Pre-Sociology and Anthropology during their freshman or sophomore year, and will be advised by the Undergraduate Academic Services Center. Pre-majors are strongly encouraged to take SOCA 199 (Orientation to Sociology and Anthropology) as early as possible. This one-credit course is offered every fall and spring semester and covers: Careers, curriculum planning, how to get involved in the discipline, and core research and writing skills.
Admission to the major requires:
- Completion of SOCA 101 (Introduction to Sociology) or SOCA 105 (Introduction to Anthropology) with a grade of C or higher
- Completion of STAT 211 (preferred) or STAT 111 with a grade of C or higher
- Completion of 58 credit hours with a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 and a minimum GPA of 2.25 across all SOCA courses
There is no formal application form or deadline. The Division requires that students transfer their files to the Division by February 15 if they wish to be advised for fall registration and by September 15 if they wish to be advised for spring registration. Student files received after the deadline will not be guaranteed an advisor or an advising appointment. Students may transfer their files in the semester that they will complete 58 credit hours, but they must have completed STAT 211/111 in a previous semester.
Procedure:
- Request your file from the Undergraduate Academic Services Center or other applicable source.Take the file to the Eberly College Advising Office in Room 221 Armstrong Hall. While you wait, a staff member will complete the proper paper work for you. Take your file and your copy of the completed paper work to the Scoiology and Anthropology main office in 307 Knapp Hall
- The Division will review your file and assign you to a faculty advisor. Determine your faculty advisor by consulting the Division website's student advisor list.
- Some faculty members advise students using one-on-one appointments, some with group sessions, and some with a combination of methods. Consult the deparment's priority registration schedule to determine your faculty advisor’s procedures.
