Admission Requirements and Proceedures
Students may declare themselves Pre-Criminology and Investigations during their freshman or sophomore year, and will be advised by the Undergraduate Academic Services Center. Pre-majors are strongly encouraged to take SOCA 199 (Orientation to Sociology and Anthropology) as early as possible. This one-credit course is offered every fall and spring semester and covers careers, curriculum planning, how to get involved in the discipline, and core research and writing skills.
Admission to the major requires:
- Completion of SOCA 101 (Introduction to Sociology) or SOCA 105 (Introduction to Anthropology) with a grade of C or higher
- Completion of STAT 211 or STAT 215 with a grade of C or higher
- Completion of 58 credit hours with a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 and a minimum GPA of 2.5 across all SOCA courses
Students must apply by February 15 for fall admission and September 15 for spring admission. Students may apply in the semester that they will complete 58 credit hours, but they must have completed STAT 211/215 in a previous semester.
Procedure:
- Obtain a CI application form from the bulletin board outside the Sociology and Anthropology main office (307 Knapp Hall) or download one from the department's website.
- Return your completed application (in person, by mail, or by fax) to the Sociology and Anthropology main office for division review. The address and fax number are provided on the form.
- After departmental review, the Division will notify you of the status of your application
- If you are accepted in February, you will attend one of the Division’s group advising sessions in March to register for fall classes. If you are accepted in September, you will attend an October group advising session to register for spring classes. For subsequent semesters, you will be assigned to an individual faculty advisor. Determine your faculty advisor by consulting the student advisor list.
- Some faculty members advise students using one-on-one appointments, some with group sessions, and some with a combination of methods. Consult the priority registration schedule to determine your faculty advisor’s procedures.
