Recently, four alumni of the WVU Master of Public Administration program were recognized by the State Journal as being among 40 West Virginians under the age of 40 who are considered our state's "Generation Next: 40 Under 40." Our alumni are recognized for their commitment to public service, for contributions to community and economic development, for active involvement in voluntary service, and for demonstrating leadership skills. Public Administration graduate student, Ashley Helmick, has been selected for an exclusive internship with the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB). Ms. Helmick is one of only four students in the country to be selected. To learn more, see: http://wvutoday.wvu.edu/news/page/5411/
The Division of Public Administration's new Leadership Minor offers students "hands-on" learning experiences through mentoring partnernships with leaders at WVU and in local organizations and agencies. This spring, undergraduates in Leadership Studies 401 are gaining a wealth of experience. In October 2006, the Division launched its new Public Administration Residency Program, a special two day event featuring a distinguished practitioner in residence at the Division. Every year, the Division sends MPA students to Charleston to participate in the West Virginia’s legislative internship programs. In September 2006, two senior legislators visited the Division to promote the Legislature’s internship opportunities and to share insights on the legislative process. West Virginia University is committed to helping to train tomorrow’s leaders. A new leadership minor has been established and assigned to the Division of Public Administration. In August 2006, Dr. Brian Gerber’s research on mass evacuation scenarios from the Washington, D.C. metro area to West Virginia gained national attention. Dr. Gerber, an Assistant Professor of Public Administration, both teaches and conducts research on the topics of homeland security and disaster preparedness & response.
