TEST 2 material

Weekly Schedule

September 29... Kinematics, part 1

Models of natural motion in space and on the earth Aristotle, Galileo, Kepler, Newton. Who was right?

Models of Falling Bodies... Aristotle vs Galileo... Both were right.

The beginning of the laboratory to test theories and hypotheses building theories and models. Inclined planes led to two major conclusions.

Law of Falling bodies! Is the moon falling? When is a body "falling"? The 1,3,5,7... pattern in nature...

Concepts to describe motion position (in a reference frame), velocity, acceleration.

Motion along the path... our framework for describing motion.

Exploratories: Home projects 1, 2, 6 (if safe), Driving Physics (Assignment?)

Discussion: Logic Puzzle on Test if desired. Review Questions 5, 6, 13-16, 20, 21

Assignment: Taking a drive recording position and velocity, mapping the

path, graphing the data. E2, 8, 10, 12, 17

October 6... Kinematics, part 2

Velocity, V, and acceleration along the path, Apath, and acceleration perpendicular to the path, Aperp. Using vectors.

Simulating motion on the computer simulating motion in the classroom. Using the CBL.

Going in circles. Going in ellipses.. the moon

Experiencing acceleration: in a car (straight lines, hills, curves, potholes, speedbumps), on a rollercoaster, on a bike, on a swing.

Constant acceleration along a path

Constant vertical acceleration... projectile motion

Discussion: Car Trip Data and Analysis

Exploratories:

Creating a path in the classroom with post-it notes.

Making Distance-Time Graphs (if CBLs available)

Walking This Way Charades, Describing Motion,

Motion Along The Path, Kinematics Kit (lots of things to do)

Assignment: P 5, 7, 11, 17

October 13.... Newton's Law, part 1 (or continue Motion?)

Newton's Laws... can a horse pull a wagon? Fitting the laws together. Putting the horse inside the wagon... the automobile.

Looking at Forces... always paired... requiring two bodies... special cases: Gravity and electricity.

Kinematics to Dynamics... reviewing motion. The concept of momentum.

Exploratories: Matchbox Magic, Normal Force, Classifying Forces,

How Large is a Pull?

Discussion: R3, 8, 10, 12, 19, 24, 25, 26

October 17 ... WVSTA Meeting at Snowshoe (not required for class)

Saturday: 9 am - 10:30 am

Meeting of Telecourse Mentors and Site Leaders

Bring reports, records, suggestions, exploratories

Saturday: 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Meeting of Telecourse Students (and Mentors, if desire)

Bring discussion topics, reactions, ideas, exploratories

Test 2... Material Covered September 29, October 6, 13

Will not be posted until after class on October 20.
