Center for Women’s Studies explores Appalachian migration and diversity

Morgantown, W.Va., September 27, 2007:  The Eberly College of Arts and Sciences and the Center for Women’s Studies will present a film titled “Long Journey Home” on Oct. 15 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Shenandoah Room of the Mountainlair.

Sponsored by the Appalachian Cultures Committee for Diversity Week, the documentary explores ethnic diversity and migration patterns in and out of the Appalachian region during the first coal boom in the 1910s.  Individual stories describe the economic forces, personal choices and conflicts of making a living and maintaining a home place.

Dr. Barb Howe, director of the Center for Women’s Studies and associate professor of history, is moderator of the event.

The Center for Women’s Studies offers a calendar of events for fall 2007.  All events are free and open to the public.  The various lectures are made possible by financial contributions to the Women’s Studies Program Development Fund at West Virginia University.
