Eberly Family Professor of Civil War Studies to speak at Civil War conferences

Morgantown, W.Va., September 14, 2007: Dr. Peter Carmichael, the WVU Department of History’s first Eberly Family Professor of Civil War Studies, will present lectures at two Civil War conferences this October.

The first conference is the Lee Memorial Program at Washington and Lee University on October 8. This year’s program is titled “The Historical Legacy of Robert E. Lee” and will commemorate the 137th anniversary of Lee’s death.

Carmichael will give the keynote address, “Truth is Mighty and Will Eventually Prevail: Why Americans disagree about the historical legacy of Robert E. Lee.” His lecture will address how Robert E. Lee is represented and interpreted at today’s historic sites.

He will also speak at the 10th Annual Conference on the Art of Command in the Civil War in Middleburg, Va. on October 13, where he will present the lecture “So Far From God and So Close to Stonewall Jackson: The Execution of Three Shenandoah Valley Soldiers.”

Carmichael earned his BA in history from Indiana University at Indianapolis in 1988, and his MA and Ph.D. from Penn State University in 1992 and 1996, respectively. He was named a Mellon Research Fellow at the Virginia Historical Society in 2002 and also served as a Scholar-in-Residence at the Gettysburg National Military Park.

He has written and edited several books including “The Last Generation: Young Virginians in Peace, War, and Reunion” (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2005), “Lee’s Young Artillerist: William R. J. Pegram” (University Press of Virginia, 1995) and “Audacity Personified: The Generalship of Robert E. Lee” (Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press, 2004). He is currently working on a book entitled “Black Rebels,” which will explore the experience of slaves who served as Confederate soldiers.

The Eberly Family Professorship of Civil War Studies is supported by the Wellington F. Morrison and Sheldon C. Morrison Civil War Program Enhancement Fund, which was established by James S. and Laura C. Walker of Morgantown.

The Department of History is part of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University.
