Mathematics Professor receives Distinguished Service Award from WV Council of Teachers of Mathematics

Morgantown, WV, March 27, 2006:Dr. Laura Pyzdrowski, Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University, was recently named the 2007 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award by the West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (WVCTM).

The award is the most prestigious award granted by the WVCTM and was awarded for Pyzdrowski’s outstanding work in mathematics education including her active roles in Project MERIT, the Blue Ribbon Committee, WvEB Algebra, and Project Impact.

“I am honored to receive this prestigious award from the mathematics education community in West Virginia. In particular, this award is meaningful to me because I was nominated by those with whom I work. This validates for me that my work is making a difference for the teachers and students in West Virginia,” comments Pyzdrowski.

Pyzdrowski is the Pre-Collegiate Mathematics Coordinator at WVU and specializes in Mathematics Education with her research mainly focusing on the teaching of college algebra. She co-coordinates College Algebra and Pre-calculus and directs the highly successful High School Web Math program. She nurtured the Blue Ribbon Committee from its founding, creating both a vehicle by which to provide direct impact and influence in the northern counties of the state, and a conduit of information back to the counties to foster collaborative professional development projects.

Also, Pyzdrowski and her husband Anthony work together to develop web-based instructional materials and regularly present their work at national conferences. Pyzdrowski has one son, Wade, and is the daughter of Drs. Stephen and Nancy Priselac of Hopwood, PA.

Annually since 1972, The WVCTM has recognized an outstanding West Virginia mathematics educator with the Distinguished Service Award, "The Chair." "The Chair" is bestowed upon a member who has consistently served the organization and mathematics community of West Virginia. The award consists of a Captain's Chair with an engraved plaque and life membership in the WVCTM.

An affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the WVCTM is a statewide organization that advocates the best practices in mathematics instruction for the students of West Virginia. It is devoted to encouraging an active interest in mathematics, to improving the teaching of mathematics at all levels in schools, and to improve the teacher training programs in colleges.
