Women’s Studies to present film on role of women in the Catholic Church

Morgantown, WV, March 15, 2006: Women’s rights and the Catholic Church will be the focus of a film presentation by the Center for Women’s Studies next Monday.

The documentary “Heretics” will be shown Monday, March 19, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. in Room G-21 White Hall on WVU’s Downtown Campus. The event is free and open to the public. A discussion will follow the film.

In the movie, two former Roman Catholic nuns talk about their struggle with the Roman Catholic Church over issues and stances related to women, including ordination of women priests, the rights of women to choose an abortion, and the rights of Catholics to dissent from official Church teachings.

Sue Amos, founder and president of the West Virginia affiliate of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, will serve as discussion leader.

The Center for Women’s Studies is housed in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University.
