Social work students to sponsor forum on drugs, alcohol

Morgantown, WV, November 6, 2006:  Though many students feel they’ve seen and heard it all when it comes to alcohol and drug education, the students in one community organizing class aren’t so sure.

To get the truth out, these students in the Division of Social Work in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences are sponsoring an open discussion forum for students, faculty and staff titled “You think you know, but you have no idea… the truth about drugs and alcohol.”

The event will be Wednesday, Nov. 8 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Mountainlair’s Greenbrier Room. A panel of professionals who work with victims of sexual assault, along with a law enforcement officer, will be present. There will also be a booth sponsored by Valley Crisis Specialists. Refreshments will be provided.

Social work graduate student Beth Chambers, of Carmichaels, Pa., said that the goal of the event is to help build awareness about events that are often excluded from campus safety statistics or left out of the newspapers.

Students in Dr. Ginny Majewski’s community organizing class who planned the event include Chambers; Greta Martin, of Morgantown; Onick Lewis, of Washington, D.C.; Elliott Branch, of Brownsville, Pa., Rachel Blais, of Morgantown; Holly Steadman, of Bruceton Mills; Meredith Zickafoose, of Point Pleasant; and Mary Yocco, of Bridgeport.
