Eberly College announces Riggle Fellowships

Morgantown, WV, May 10, 2006:  Dr. Lara Farina and Dr. Priscilla Shilaro are the recipients of the 2006 Riggle Fellowships in the Humanities from the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University.

The Riggle Fellowships provide $5,000 in summer salary to tenure-track assistant professors to support their research and scholarship. Candidates must come from the disciplines of English, Foreign Languages, History, Philosophy, or Religious Studies. The recipients were selected by the Dean of the Eberly College, based on recommendations from the College's Research and Graduate Studies Committee.

Dr. Lara Farina, assistant professor of English, will use her fellowship to attend the International Medieval Conference in Leeds, England this summer. She will present her work at that conference, then stay in Europe for several weeks to conduct scholarly research in major European libraries. Dr. Farina holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in English from Fordham University and a BA in Humanities from the University of California, Berkeley. She joined the faculty at WVU in 2002. Her teaching and research interests are English and Continental medieval literature, medieval piety, and the history of reading.

Dr. Priscilla Shilaro, assistant professor of history, will continue her research on gender, patriarchy, and land questions in pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial Kenya. She anticipates completing a book and two articles as well as initiating research on a new study of colonial land policy in Kenya. Dr. Shilaro holds a Ph.D. in history from WVU, and an M.A. in history and a B. Ed. in arts from Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya. She joined the faculty of the Eberly College in 2002 and served for three years as coordinator of WVU's Africana Studies Program.

"I am very pleased to be able to offer these fellowships to new faculty members in the humanities," stated Dr. Mary Ellen Mazey, Dean of the Eberly College. "Both provided strong applications and I look forward to seeing the results of the work that the Riggle Fellowships will support.
