Mays named College Mathematics Teacher of the Year

Morgantown, WV, May 8, 2006:  Mike Mays, professor of mathematics in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University, has been selected as the 2006 College Mathematics Teacher of the Year by the West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Dr. Mays received his BA in Mathematics from WVU in 1973 and his PhD from Pennsylvania State University in 1977. He came to WVU in 1977, but he has also served as a visiting professor at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, and at the University of Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg, South Africa. Dr. Mays’ primary research interest is in number theory.

Dr. Mays has previously served as Vice President and President of the West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics and has organized the High School Student Mathematics Symposium for many years. In addition to his mathematics research, he has special interest in distance education, teacher training, and developing software for mathematics laboratories. He has also received the Outstanding Teaching Award from the Allegheny Mountain Section of the Mathematical Association of America, the Distinguished Service Award from WVTCM, and the WVU Foundation Outstanding Teaching Award, and was recently a finalist in the Faculty Merit Foundation’s Professor of the Year Award program.

The West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics, WVCTM, is a statewide organization that advocates the best practices in mathematics instruction for the students of West Virginia. The organization is devoted to encouraging an active interest in mathematics and to improve the teaching of mathematics at all levels in schools -- and to improve the teacher training program in colleges. WVCTM is an affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
