Wheeling MSW program graduates first class
Morgantown, WV, July 3, 2006: The first students to complete West Virginia University's Wheeling WV-based Master's degree in Social Work will graduate on July 22.
The graduating class includes 19 students. Dr. Patricia Chase, adviser to the students during their first two years in the program, will give the commencement address. The ceremony will be held at the Ohio Valley Medical Center Old Nursing Residence Auditorium, on Eoff Street in Wheeling at 6:00 p.m. on July 22. The event is free and open to the public.
The Division of Social Work, housed in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at WVU, established the Wheeling program in 2003. The off-campus Master of Social Work program is a part-time three year program that gives persons the opportunity to pursue an MSW degree without residency on WVU's main campus in Morgantown. Students take four semesters of coursework and complete 960 hours of field placement, including 24 hours of field seminars. WVU offers MSW programs in Beckley, Charleston, Keyser, Martinsburg, Morgantown, and Wheeling.
"I am a single mother who would never have been able to achieve my master's degree had this program not been offered in Wheeling," said Marsha Woods, a program supervisor at Northwood Health Systems who will receive her MSW on July 22.
A second cohort of 24 students is expected to graduate in 2008. Applications are now being taken for the third class of MSW students in Wheeling. That group will begin its studies in the fall of 2007.
The Wheeling Social Work program recently announced an affiliation agreement with the Ohio Valley Medical Center (OVMC) for classrooms, office space, and administrative support. A reception to celebrate that arrangement will be held in the fall. "OVMC has been incredibly supportive," said Chatman Neely, site coordinator for the Wheeling MSW program. "We are very pleased to enter into this formal relationship with them."
