Morgantown, WV, July 28, 2006:  More and more, professionals are seeking online classes as a means for furthering their education. In response to this increasing demand, the School of Applied Social Sciences in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University is offering the Master of Legal Studies (MLS) degree program online.

WVU’s MLS is an interdisciplinary degree program that applies broad-based legal knowledge to problem solving, decision making and other workplace responsibilities. It is designed for those in human resources, training and labor relations, legal assistants and paralegals, and judicial and court workers. The program also accommodates mid-level administrative professionals responsible for developing departmental plans, setting goals and deadlines, implementing improvement procedures and supervising work.

Candidates are required to take seven courses, including Law and the Legal System, Researching the Law, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Administrative Legal Process, Law and Society, and Legislative Process, and five electives. Some of the elective courses include Commerce and Law, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law and Procedure, Employment Law, Family Law, Finance and Law, and Media and Law. The Research Capstone concludes the degree by applying acquired knowledge into a guided written research project.

The courses are scheduled two to a term in sequential order and are offered on a part-time basis. WVU faculty from the Departments of Political Science and Public Administration and the College of Law, as well as practicing attorneys teach the courses. The MLS degree program earned the “2001 Award for Excellence” for credit programs in the Mid-Atlantic Region given by the University Continuing Education Association for expressed needs, direct workplace application and interdisciplinary applied curriculum. Classes begin January 2007.
