Department of Philosophy to sponsor Pre-Med Panel Discussion April 11

Morgantown, WV, April 7, 2006: Students interested in attending medical school after graduation will have the chance to get advice from a panel of experts at a Pre-Med Panel Discussion on Tuesday, April 11.

The discussion will be held Tuesday, April 11 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. in E. Moore Hall on WVU’s Downtown campus, with doctors, medical students, professors, and medical school admissions personnel providing practical advice to help WVU undergraduates prepare for medical school and medical careers. The event is sponsored by the Department of Philosophy in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences.

Panel experts include current WVU medical students Thomas Caranasos and Jonathan Pratt, both of whom completed undergraduate degrees in philosophy and biology; David Morgan, MD, Chair of the WVU School of Medicine’s Admissions Committee; Mark Wicclair, professor of philosophy who specializes in medical ethics; and Dan Carrier, WVU Outstanding Senior and Order of Augusta recipient whose degree is in chemistry with a minor in philosophy.

Though most students interested in medical school tend to major in scientific fields such as biology or chemistry, Sharon Ryan, Department of Philosophy chair, believes that philosophy makes an excellent second major or minor for those who intend to go on to medical school.

“Of course students who go to medical school must major in one of the sciences. However, philosophy is a good way to enhance this education. Philosophy teaches students logical problem solving skills in an environment with disagreement, uncertainty, and fragmentary evidence. Philosophy teaches students to pay careful attention to both the details and to the big issues, and the critical thinking skills developed in philosophy courses help students do better on the MCAT. We also have a very strong ethics component, including health care ethics, in our curriculum,” Ryan said.
