FACDIS summer institute concludes
Morgantown, WV, August 11, 2006: The West Virginia Consortium for Faculty and Course Development in International Studies (FACDIS) 2006 Summer Institute concluded July 21st at Blackwater Falls. FACDIS is housed in the Department of Political Science in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University.
The title of this year’s institute was West Virginia and the World: Globalism, Then and Now and featured lectures on West Virginia, China and Vietnam. Running July 16-21, the institute included more than three dozen teachers from across the state and from all levels of K-12 education. It was offered to expand pre-collegiate teachers’ knowledge and understanding of WV’s role in the world in historical and contemporary terms.
The featured presenters this year were: Dr. Ken Fones-Wolf, a specialist in labor and working class history in Appalachia and professor of History in the Eberly College; Dr. Steven Leibo, Professor of Modern International History and Politics at Russell Sage College; and Tom Collins, a retired expert on teaching with a focus on global education and a lifetime of practical experience.
Dr. Jack Hammersmith, Director of FACDIS, said of this year’s institute, “"It's always a delight and an inspiration to see outstanding teachers from all over the state eagerly advancing their global education."
Established in 1980, FACDIS is a consortium of 20 West Virginia institutions of higher education with over 375 participating faculty in international studies and foreign languages from more than fifteen different disciplines. The Consortium is devoted to improving international education in West Virginia, working to provide professional development opportunities for public school teachers, assist in the revision and enrichment of international studies and foreign language courses, help faculty remain abreast of new knowledge and innovative teaching methods in their fields, facilitate the active use of varied instructional materials, and increase student and faculty participation in study-abroad programs.
