Subjet:  Arrivée à Paris

1) La famille Lastinger prendra le vol US Air 48 le 27 mai 2000 à 5:55 pm de Pittsburgh jusqu'à Paris Charles De Gaulle (Terminal 1).  Ce vol arrive à 7:45am le 28 mai (à cause du décalage horaire).  Nous repartirons le 11 juillet par le US Air 49, qui part de CDG à 12:45pm.

2) le programme commencera officiellement le mardi 30 mai à Paris.

3) J'ai réservé et payé des chambres pour tout le monde pour les nuits du 30 mai, 31 mai, 1 & 2 juin à l'hôtel d'Amiens.

4) Si vous désirez venir sur le même vol que nous, vous pourrez passez 48 heures à Paris avant que le programme ne commence officiellement.  Si vos finances vous le permettent, c'est une excellente idée puisque vous pourrez ainsi vous remettre du décalage horaire.  Si vous désirez descendre à ce même hôtel d'Amiens, vous pouvez réserver une chambre pour des nuits supplémentaires à l'adresse ci-dessous:

Notez que personnellement, nous partirons directement de CDG pour Les Sables le 28, et que nous ne reviendrons à Paris que le 30 mai.

5) Si vous voulez bénéficier d'un tarif de consolidateur (nous n'avons payé nos billets que $ 556.00, taxes comprises), vous devez réserver dès maintenant car les places sont limitées.  Il y aura des places plus chères sur le même vol disponibles jusqu'à quelques semaines avant le départ.

N'hésitez pas à me contacter si vous avez des questions quant aux détails de votre voyage.  Souvenez-vous que voyager en groupe est plus amusant.

Cordial Tunisians, Boul'Mich, and the Left Bank in Summer.

Hello fellow 2000 Vendéens,

Following Dr. Lastinger's suggestion, I thought I would make a travel-related note to anyone who might be interested.  I am going to be staying in Paris for a week after classes are complete in Vendée. If anyone else is interested in doing some fascinating off-the-beaten-path things with me that week, I would be more than happy to have someone (or more than one person) join me. I madly love Paris, and this'll be my first change to be there and not seriously jet-lagged. So I have a rather ambitious agenda of things to explore.
My grandmother is probably going to be meeting me there in Paris, but she'll likely not feel up to doing a lot in the afternoons and evenings. So, although some days I won't be free all day, I'll probably be left to find things to do on my own for a large part of the time. If anyone else is going to be in the vicinity, and is interested in what I'm doing, I would be happy to meet and join you.
The kinds of things I'd be doing are rather tame (and probably boring by some standards.) I usually try to avoid touristy things. Most of the stuff I want to do is of a rather artsy/intellectual persuasion, but I'm flexible.
Some things I've been thinking about doing:
--Dining at the Brasserie Balzar on the Rue des Écoles. It's a pretty hip place for contemporary intellectuals, not a passé once-intellectual place that has become a tourist haunt like Brasserie Lipp, Café Flore, and Aux Deux Magots. Also, meals aren't nearly as expensive at Balzar than at the aforementioned establishments.
--The comédie musicale (with which all French 103 students should be acquainted,) Notre Dame de Paris, will be playing in Paris all summer. I've been thinking about trying to get tickets to that or an opera.
--Spending a day (or more) SERIOUSLY perusing the Louvre
--Musée de Cluny (middle ages art)
--Antique shopping at the enormous Parisian flea market, Puces
--Antiquarian bookshopping along the Seine at the Bouquinistes (or however one spells it) & along "Boul'Mich" in the Latin Quarter, Shakespeare and Co., etc.
--Perhaps a day trip to Bayeux, Mont St-Michel, or something like that.
--The dept. stores on Blvd. Haussmann.
So, if you're interested in checking these places out (or similar ones,) let me know and we can plan something.
Also, if anyone is looking for a good hotel in Paris, the place where I stay offers rooms at $50-60/night (w/breakfast incl.) for a single room with one bed (and your own bathroom!). It's a very nice quaint hotel mostly for business travellers (it's peaceful.) It is located right by the Gare St-Lazare (right by the big department stores, American Express, a metro station, and a major bus terminal.) It's run by a group of really friendly Tunisians. If you'd like information on the hotel, I'd be happy to help you secure a room there.
Also, the hotel is right up the street from the Lebanese Bank, which consistently has the best exchange rates in Paris (despite the rude chain-smoking zombie who works behind the counter and counts your money 30 times before he gives it to you.)
The only other major expenses would be a Carte Orange and a Carte Musée. I don't have updated prices on those, but I'll be getting them soon.

Subject:  les malentendus culturels

Chers Vendéens,

Je viens de lire un livre parfait pour chaque américain qui voyage en France.
Ce livre s'appelle "Cultural Misunderstandings: The French-American
Experience" par Raymonde Carroll. L'auteur est une anthropologue qui étudie
les différences culturelles qui existent entre les Etats-Unis et la France.
Carroll écrit spécifiquement au sujet des problèmes qui peuvent se produire
entre les étudiants américains et leurs "familles adoptés." De plus, elle
discute la politesse de la café, l'art de la parole, et une myriade d'autres
choses qui peuvent améliorer la vie d'un américain en France. Je le
recommande à tout les Vendéens.
