June 30: Heart Queens, Part Deux

2009-06-30_015
Into the chapel of Anne de Bretagne. It's a long story, but we saw her wedding to the king of France yesterday. To insure the unity of her native Britanny and the nation of which she was now queen, she needed a son to inherit the throne. The Hundred Years War had established Salic Law as the rule in France. Thanks in part to Joan of Arc, no princess or duchess could hold the throne in Paris. Anne did have two male children with Charles, but both died in infancy. Here is the chapel where she prayed for another son. The prayers would never be answered.
