This abbey was founded a thousand years ago by Robert d'Arbrissel, a hermite who gathered many faithful followers and who chose this site as their place or work and worship. This is Robert's tomb. Robert had some strange ideas, and one was that Christ loved and obeyed his mother Mary. In this monastery he united men and women under one rule -- the rule of a woman. This is unique in Christendom. At Fontevraud, women ruled over men.
