June 23: Week Four, Island One

2009-06-23_034
The came the 9th century and the Vikings were at sail. The wealth of Noirmoutier was an easy target for these sailor-warriors. When they took the island, the monks fled, taking the relics of Saint Philbert with them all the way across France. The string of churches that took Philbert's name is still there, as is the church of Tournus in Burgundy where Philbert's body now lies. This femur and this vertebra were returned to Philbert's original church. They are now the object of great veneration and are credited with answering many prayers offered up by pilgrims who come here in his honor.
