Our longtime friend Anne-Marie will guide us around the island this morning. In the background you see the castle of Noirmoutier. This island stands just off the estuary of the Loire River, and has been a key strategic point for many centuries. Vikings, the English, the Dutch, and most recently the Germans, have all occupied this site at one time or another.
