Maillezais was brought to ruin during the Wars of Religion between Protestants and Catholics in the 1500's. Earlier than that, we see the evolution from Romanesque to Gothic. To the right the first timid efforts to touch heaven with stone (Romanesque). To the left, the more daring work of Gothic art.
