It's a paradox that Marie-Antoinette built this hamlet in order to play at living like a peasant. Her other extravagances would lead the very peasants she imitated to revolt against her and her husband. One notable exception to that is in Vendée as we'll soon see. The Vendée peasants lived in close proximity to their lords and loved them. When the Revolution came, Vendée would rise up in defense of their lords and of their beloved queen Marie-Antoinette.
