Henri IV, king of France and Navarre. Raised a Protestant, he was the king's closest cousin when Henri III was assassinated by a religious fanatic in 1589. Henri de Navarre converted to Catholocism, married the catholic princess Queen Margot (marguerite de Valois), and promised "a chicken in every pot" to the people (he originated that expression). Still not enough. He had to take Paris by force. When he did, he proclamed the world's first doctrine of religious tolerence: the Edict of Nantes, 1598.
