Here are Henri II and his Italian queen, Catherine de Médicis. There few more important couples in French history. Henry died in a sporting accident in 1559 (his best friend's lance broke in a joust, the shard that come forth went into Henri's eye and out his ear). Without this strong leader, France then entered into violent years of civil war between Catholics and Protestants. Catherine tried through her three sons to manage this turmoil.
