The cloister was designed for the monks here to walk, to read, to pray, and to meditate, always clockwise -- but centuries before what we call a clock was invented. Instead of "clockwise" we should more correctly say "monkwise" when we describe our normal sense of deambulation (every where but in baseball, I would guess...).
