The first great wealth of this island was developed by the monks of the early middle ages. This land was christianized by the local patron saint -- Saint Philbert. When he died in the 600's, his body was entombed in the church that carries his name today. Since those days, the church has grown higher and bigger. That original chapel is thus what we now call the crypt.
