Day One -- The Louvre
The French paintings of the Louvre tell the story of centuries of art and of history. We begin today with a look at the portrait of Jean II le Bon (King John the Good). He was one of the kings that began the struggle to keep the crown of France from falling into the hands of the English. Today we call that struggle the Hundred Years War, and most of us know few of its heroes beyond Joan of Arc. King John had successes and failures, including being captured by his enemies, but he did save the crown for his French successors.
