Gardens and Gore

Among the tools designed to harvest the fields of he logis is the traditional scythe.   When the peasants of these lands decided to rise up against the new Republic, the blades of the scythe were the closest weapon at hand.  Turned up on the handle, and against a single-fire rifle (the best available at the time), the Vendéens could stand up, draw the fire and then charge for hand-to-hand combat.  The courage, the strategy, was early and convincing.  The Republicans faced incredible forces from the East and from the Channel.  In the heart of France, this resistance was all the more serious.
