The inhabitants of this swamp were very poor in money. They ate curdled milk for protein and grew one pig per year for their meat. They raised chickens and ducks for barter in the local market. Today the city of Challans has taken credit for these products. If you get a chicken or duck "de Challans" you have one of the most prized dishes of France. |
