Our Ladies: La Dame, La liberté . . .

Among the first new-style structures to follow Saint-Denis was the church of Paris -- Notre Dame de Paris.  Louis VI died, but Suger lived.  Having arranged the wedding of Young Louis VII to the richest princess of the world, Eleanor of Aquitaine, he also left behind the urge to build even bigger and greater than Saint Denis.  In 1163, construction on Notre Dame de Paris began.
