In the Heart of Old Vendée -- and New...

Without uniforms or regular arms, the peasants of Vendée sewed a simple emblem onto their humble garb.  Generally this was the Sacred Heart mounted with a cross or a crown. Sometimes two hearts were used, and with both a cross and a crown.  This is the origin of the hearts of Vendée widely recognized today:
