We see here one of the most modern of technologies in a centuries-old system
that delivers fresh fish from here to Paris and beyond. The machine is
actually a computer on a cart with a "caller" who announces the progress of
the sale. The bidders are here from restaurants, markets and
distribution chains hoping for the best price on the best fish. Each
bidder has a remote control that raises or lowers his the bid and attaches his
name to the sale. This system has only recently replaced the melodic
chant of the "cryer" who shouted our prices and names as the auction
progressed.
