The Sands of Olonne...

This plaque is in honor of the sailors and fishers of  Les Sables who worked for freedom in World War II.   Les Sables was occupied by German forces in those days, but the sailors on the sea were a force unto themselves.  Many of the supplies and vital information for the French Resistance came through here on fishing boats that passed right under the eyes of Hitler's SS troups.  The Cross of Lorraine here is the traditional secret symbol of the Resistance to Fascism and the Nazi's.
