Before the Renaissance the thing we think of as European nations did not
really exist. In the English world, for example, we think of Richard the
Lion-Hearted as the king of England. That's true in fact, but we tend to
ignore that King Richard spoke mainly French and considered these lands his real home. His
mother, Eleanore of Aquitaine was born a few miles from here and she would also
always think of this as home. The origins of the Tower of Arundel are
mysterious, but they are surely mixed up in this story of France and England.
Natalie tells us the only other place known with the name Arundel is in
England, just across the sea from these ports.
