my own favorite is falconry. As you know, firearms did not exist in Europe before the Renaissance. Even long after, muskets were hardly a reliable means of bringing down game at a distance. For large animals, the arrow was often sufficient. For smaller prey, however, nothing was more dependable than a well trained bird. The skill of the falconers today shows amply well the efficiency of such a method. |
