The earliest Christians of the Roman Empire were of course considered heretics in their defiance of the Roman gods.  Those so condemned were often sentenced to the games where they lived or died by the gladium -- the sword of the gladiator.  A fallen gamesman's life was decided by the thumb of the Emperor and of his subjects.  Things look pretty bleak for the moment, don't they?
