One of the wings of the Château de Chinon features a museum dedicated to the fact and fiction of Jeanne d'Arc. Her case is one of those where even the best of historians are confounded when they set upon the task of winnowing the truth from the legend. Such is often the case of figures so important to their time that they could not be understood by it. All we know of Joan comes down to us from men and women little capable of understanding a woman who shaped the destiny of the modern world. |
