Mindy's research and field interview with one of the zoo's directors reveals that the zoo is located on land just outside town that had laid unused for several years. The idea of a zoo came from the founders who were interested in preserving endangered species. This has become the zoo's primary objective in the years since. The survival of the zoo has depended both on community support and on the tourist economy that is so important to Les Sables. From her interview Mindy learned that among species in the world today some 698 mammals, 1047 birds, 181 reptiles, 61 amphibians, and 762 fishes are threatened with extinction. |
