The original construction of L'Hermione involved some 4000
workers and took eight months. This project, begun in 1997, has
nine dedicated craftsmen and will be finished in 2008. Financing
is provided largely by the city of Rochefort, the department of Charente-Maritime,
the French government, and the European Union. Fifty percent of
the costs come from visitors like us, however. We are proud to make this small contribution to the memory of General Lafayette.
After our visit of Lafayette's ship we stroll along the Charente back toward the Vendée-Mobile. |
